Fashion Week Takes on Homelessness with Christina Milian, JWoww and Bravolebs.

Fashion Week Takes on Homelessness with Christina Milian, JWoww and Bravolebs.

BY HILARY GEORGE-PARKIN  FEB 10, 2017, 2:32PM EST

"A key part of the campaign, the hashtag #ItCanBeYou, is supposed to convey the idea that under different circumstances, anyone could be homeless. “I think a lot of people that are fortunate — that have support, have friends, have family — they don’t understand that a lot of times, homelessness isn’t an option, it’s a life circumstance that takes them that way,” says Guimaraes. “When you get really far down and you have no one to pick you back up, it’s hard to get back up on your own. It’s really to get people to be more compassionate.”

While they may not be walking the runway, a handful of people in attendance do have some personal experience with homelessness, including two of the night’s performers: Lucas Asher, the lead singer of the band Faulkner, and a Brooklyn rapper named Young MG.

Asher and the band Faulkner, who performed at the event.

Asher and the band Faulkner, who performed at the event.

Asher, who spent time on the streets of New York in his youth, doesn’t dwell on the negatives of his past. “I think it could happen to anybody, that's true,” he says. “But if you look at everybody here celebrating, it's not about how bad it is, it's about what's possible, so I tend to look at it in an aspirational way.” Today, he splits his time between his hometown and Venice, California, and last year his band released an EP produced by Wu Tang Clan’s RZA.

Young MG’s struggles aren’t quite behind him yet; I talk to him at the end of the night, after the last performer has packed up and the DJ is entreating the dwindling crowd to dance to a steady stream of Chris Brown and Bruno Mars. He wears a yellow hoodie and sweatpants and a backwards Yankees fitted. “I pulled up to show some love for the homeless people, because I too went through the homelessness and I'm still facing it,” he says.

“I have felonies, I'm a project kid, I've lived a hard life,” he explains, about three inches from my ear so I can hear over the music. “It's not my fault, it's the cards that I was dealt. But if you don't have a job, then it's hard to take care of yourself, to provide, to live your dreams. Everything costs money, and nobody's going to give it to you. You have to pay to get your way up, and then people will help you up.” At some point, I realize it’s the first story of homelessness I’ve heard all night. A minute later, though, he’s moved on. “Look me up on Facebook,” he says, and when I do, I see a few dozen photos and videos from the night — selfies, videos, shot after shot of Milian, and the requisite red carpet photos, though this time, without a cardboard sign in sight."

S.C.R.D. was proud to sponsor Young MG and The NYLON Project. Sweet Chuck closed out the event with a live performance of his soon to release, new single titled, "Art Bless America." This live performance featured professional dancers Dre and King Soup from Los Angeles, choreographed by King Shaw.  If you missed these two performances you're in luck, and can catch them again, along with the rest of the Campfire Crew in April, on Thursday the 20th, from 7:00 - 9:00 PM at the Delancey, located at 168 Delancey Street, Manhattan, New York.

The NYLON Project & Aspiring Artists

Through adversity and struggle, while growing up young in the streets of Brooklyn, YOUNG MG, has developed the raw charisma, character and fortitude to survive. He has also become what's known in Hip Hop culture as the ever elusive "wordsmith," one who is a verbal poet, and know's it. But these days in the city who birthed the original art and culture, the sound is hard to find. Fortunately, meet YOUNG MG, one of few local and talented artists, on verge of bringing the "true" New York Hip Hop sound back.

“I’m a Brooklyn kid that got kicked out at a young age, forced to take on the streets for survival. My mother put me out at the age of twelve to face a hard life. I tried to go from home to home to escape a life of poverty. Just trying to come up, through the streets, I’ve been to jail, homeless, sleeping on trains and subways. I know have a bright future, with better things coming my way. I’m on the verge of making it really big. #itcanbeyou

“As an artist, I understand sacrifice, passion and commitment to the arts and commerce. In my short eight years living in New York City, I’ve also come to understand being evicted, sued, frisked, fined, fired and kicked-out. But that's really nothing compared to what many artist before or during my time endured. Therefore my overstanding not through living, is just an understanding, which can only be told through the stories of those who came before me and whom I am currently living among. Just like living in New York City, nothing ever is, what it really is, until you have lived it, and actually been there in it. In the end, I just make make music, and like to help others do the same. The summer block party led to a collaboration, and then we recorded the first record. #itcanbeyou"

The initial goal of this project is to give out 1,500 meals starting on December 1st, 2016 up until February 7th, 2017. Each person who receives a meal, will tell us their story of how they wound up on the streets and this will be shared via an IG page which will entice everyone who gives a meal to start sharing their stories with us and with this, creating a community of people helping people.

The NYLON Project will culminate with a New York Fashion Week show on February 7th, 2017, where the 25 influencers and celebrities who were part of the photo-shoot for booklet, will walk the runway side by side with their sponsored homeless partners whose story they shared, wearing sponsored brands. These brands will dress the celebrity as well as gift the homeless the ensemble so that they can use it once event is over, to go on a job interview and get off the streets.

Celebrities, Influencers and a showcase for performing talent including the musical group FAULKNER, with over 2 million youtube hits on their most recent release; Che'Nelle, Japan iTunes 10 straight weeks #1 performing artist; Grandison M. Phelps IV, dancer and choreographer for Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, JLo, Che'Nelle, with a special performance. Gramercy Duo Cook Up Crazy New Single!

Gramercy, New York City, NY (April 01, 2016) - S.C.R.D. (Sweet Chuck Ravin Dave) officially release their fourth studio single, titled “The Crave” on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify and over 20+ digital, global retailers and in CD format via Amazon. The Crave is the musical, storytelling duo’s first record release on indie record label Trip Digital Records, and includes two versions (Radio, Instrumental).

S.C.R.D. explains that “The Crave” pushes the boundaries set by traditional genres by drawing inspiration from three primary sources –Hip Hop, Rock and Pop. The resulting combination is a new FUNK ROCK sound with an old skool Hip Hop inspired beat and verse flow, a Rock and Roll style arrangement, chorus execution and orchestration mixed with a Funkadelic vibe and rolling bass-line.  This record is the first entirely written, composed, orchestrated, produced, performed and recorded by the duo, stepping out from under their partner and co-producer Dj Journey, and features only one other performing artist Eddie Eyeball.

The storyline once again is easy to follow and is about a one night stand that turns the corner, and the person you went home with goes from rave and sweet to crazy with a case of the crave! New York City causes normal people to do wild and crazy things as they seek to live out their fantasies. Sometimes people hold on to these experiences and keep coming back for more. We call this a case of “The Crave.”

As the sole featured artist on this record, S.C.R.D. once again enlisted the talented 2 Skinnee J’s bassist Eddie Eyeball to lay down the deep and groovy bass-line that drives the rhythm of the record.  S.C.R.D. explains that, “we needed to make sure that the bass nailed down the groove of the record, especially when trying to combine so many elements. The bass-line and trumpets are key to moving the song as well as keeping listener interest and accenting the chorus. Really, we just wanted to bump on car systems!”

Super Producer Dj Journey (Interview)

Dj Journey during a recording session with S.C.R.D. and The Klick at Skip Saylor Recording studio in Encino, CA.

Dj Journey during a recording session with S.C.R.D. and The Klick at Skip Saylor Recording studio in Encino, CA.

Tell us a bit about how you got into the music industry and DJing specifically?

I’ve always been into music, ever since I was a small kid sneaking off to dig through my mom’s deep record collection. Years later while working in the film business in Hollywood, I realized that music was actually my true calling and not necessarily acting. Between shoots I would make mix tapes and remixes for cash, which landed me a gig at the radio station. From there I worked my way into the night clubs, airwaves and then eventually New York City.

What all have you done since then, Trip Digital Inc. is in your resume tell us about it?

It’s always been about the music. Trip Digital Inc. is a music licensing company that I started back in 2009, when I knew that the industry was going to change for sure in the future. Over the past three years, we have been hyper focused on the composition and production process in order learn how to build commercial music that is more easily licensed and exploitable. Now we are focused on launching the next stage of the project a new digital label called - Trip Digital Records. The project is focused on launching a label specifically designed for artist and industry needs for today's environment with flexibility to adapt to the future. Stay Tuned!

What is your gear of choice when it comes to controller, software etc.

Two turntables, DJM 500 mixer and a pair of dicers on Serato. Most nightclubs and venues have CDJs. Dicers add an extra layer of control and cues that allow me to cut up new fresh tight mixes in new ways each week.

When you go out on mobile gigs what else do you use?

I haven't really strayed from the tried and true - turntables or CDJs. Mixing consoles are great if that's your thing. Sometimes I'll bring along an emcee, does that count?

For someone that has heard of you but don't knows your DJing style, give me the lowdown on what to expect when they see you spinning at Mobile Beat Las Vegas?

I've been called a Turtle in the fast lane. Maybe that's because my fingers are like a team of ninjas that mix, cut, surprise and delight audiences seeking a musical journey of awesomeness, or just want to dance their asses off!
